Genuinely was going to put up Roy Barraclough in the week (had a flashback to Corrie and Jim McDonald saying "What about ye, Sandy?"). Don't have to now.

Johnny Briggs.

Spent years on Coronation Street as Mike Baldwin, Cockernee wide boy, drinking "Scottish wine", driving a Jag and trying to fuck everything Ken Barlow had ever touched. Of he, Ken and Deirdre, the Street's particular low-rise threesome, in real life Anne Kirkbride was by far the youngest (roughly 20 years) and was first to shuffle off the set for the final time aged sixty. Mike Baldwin died on screen in the arms of Ken, of a heart attack and not a horrible fantasy realised.

He's appeared in a couple of things since dying literally on the Street, and came back as a ghost for one Christmas charity show (fucking Christmas and its ghosts) but other than that, he has been quiet. Too quiet. Rumours of his involvement in the Russian athletes doping scandal have proved unfounded and unconfirmed sightings of him checking out installations in Damascus are mentioned but never verified. When asked about it, he just grins mischievously and lights up a cigar.

We knew she wasn't dead, though, Tone.

Katie Boyle, we all went "fuck me, I thought she died years ago? (see this thread: HARRIS, ANITA)" and someone on Twitter spoke for us all when he said "for those who were wondering, yes, Bill Maynard was still alive".

Interesting, he and Winnie dying in the same week.  Why "interesting"?  Well I can reveal exclusively here that, on review of The Office (US) and Scrubs, that there was a huge gap in the market for nine series of a light-hearted show about a government/public service building with a single set and tight-knit cast of around half a dozen regulars - Spin City also fitted the genre - and Bill Lawrence exploited it well with Spin City and doubly so with Scrubs.

Maynard and Mandela, who met a few years back on a one-month-long pensioner-market Turkey and Tinsel trip to Malta and hit it off straight away through their shared love of the North Yorkshire moors, had been in extensive talks with Lawrence and were working together on a docucomedy set on Robben Island about Nelson Mandela's time there - placeholder titles included "The Kaffir" (a pun on Maynard's "The Gaffer", a Yorkshire TV comedy that Winnie thought of when she was reminiscing over her time yomping around Goathland and eating fish and chips at Whitby "before it became trendy"), "Not Half, Nelson" and "Slops".  Filming was planned to start in July.  The title they had chosen was "Oh No, It's John Vorster" as again, an homage to Selwyn Froggitt and an acknowledgement of the fraud who put Mandela away and eventually resigned and died in disgrace, but is nevertheless on the cover of the DVD below (far left).

The fucking coffin dodger is indeed 95.
God works in mysterious ways....he's still here while Frank Zappa, Bill Hicks and George Carling are not.
