I'd say modern training methods might be a factor in come cases, Tony. You only have to look at athletes in all walks of life - they're trained to straining point and aside from the injury risk, they're wide open and susceptible to illness as well. I remember Steve Redgrave on retirement had to train down for 18 months to prevent any systemic failure as stopping outright apparently would have killed him. Add a genetic flaw, say, to that and you can be a human time bomb
