my first husband was into huntin shootin etc.he managed a gun shop so he used to dabble in a lot of things coursing, rabbiting, ferrets shooting, gun repair.he was the exact opposite to me eric tbh.
although I dont quite know when gin traps were outlawed, ive heard of them.

not very nice bits of kit mg.
they did a job.
but maimed a lot of animals.

you know those bear-traps you see in films?
whereby two steel jaws are opened out with a plate in the middle,
that slam shut on the bear's foot when it steps on the plate.
well,the gin trap is a mini version.
used for smaller prey.
