Is this a good photo?
Not mine, but like that sharp barbed wire against the blur of the background, seems to create a bit of atmosphere

only my opinion , but I always tend to judge a photo on how difficult it is to replicate.
anyone with a basic understanding of depth of field could make that image in seconds .

Perhaps then its the composition.... just thought it was good, like your out walking in the country and must pass 100s of similar potential photos such as that one.

I do find that sort of thing very naff.
Its like
Pretty much college project emo shit imo.
Its like
"oh wow , look , this will make such a profound social commentary , we have the welcome sign , but look, the juxtapose of the barbed wire"
scratches beard thoughfully
Pretty much college project emo shit imo.

Have you done a lot of action photography, Kit? Sporting events and the ilk, I mean?

no , tbh I have very little interest in photography outside of my field , 17 years of people photography , very little else

Sports photography is people photgraphy, Kit...
Not sure if I've mentioned it before, but as a field evolves (things like photos being sent by wire rather than email) do you find the competition fucking annoying as what was previously the skill of few is made that much less complex (rather than saying "easier")?

not really , in fact its become far harder.
all you had to do before was buy an advert in the yellow pages, those with the biggest pockets had the biggest advert
now its about SEO and getting your website high on google , which takes as much skill as taking the photos.
its now 80% marketing 20% photography

Interesting slant, hadn't thought of that but yes, you're right. You don't have to be great, you do have to be seen. That's why McDonalds do well. "Satiscraptory" as the word goes.

There is alot of truth in that
if you search the following terms
Bristol wedding photographer
Bristol wedding photographers
wedding photographer bristol
wedding photographers bristol
I am either the first or second returned organic result.
I know people who are much better than me, and charge 3 times as much who languish on the end of page three , but they simply have no clue how to get ranked , and have to resort to paying snake oil merchants with adwords campaigns (that other photographers click on anyway to eat up their budget).

Better in what way, though? If you're looking at front end, then you have to look back end as well - if people are happy with what you've put out and how it has been packaged, you're clearly better than some Pulitzer prizewinner whose overall service and so forth is, simply, cuntish. One thing to get work, another to get referrals.

well... better in so much as they win awards and shit I guess.
They look down on me because I am a "shoot and burn" photographer , and they sell all sorts of quality add on products .
Thing is though , If I charge £650 for 8 hours work , and my only outgoing is petrol and a DVD to burn , yet they charge £1750 and have to pay out for wedding fairs, albums, an assistant on the day, frames , adword advertising etc , I bet the profit margin is within a hundred quid at the end of the day
