It's the photo to the 1857 Derby.
They didn't know the result until six weeks after the event when the artist finally got the right shade of red paint

It was heavy ground, Abdul, they tacked over to the far rail to take advantage of the better draining down the slope

Is that people viewing over the far side? In all honesty, in terms of layout, it looks like HQ - wide open spaces the other side of the track proper. Ascot a possible as well if there are spectators but an unlikely IMO. I'd guess a Jockey Club Cup or some such.

Painting would be from the infield at Ayr and the viewers would be closer. Has the feel of the Rowley Mile to me.

could be - those cunts run the wrong way don't they, only been there once before and will never return, pile of old cock of a race course

Re: Anyone recognise this painting?
Goodwood is an odd course but yes, they go right-handed.
Interesting you say "the wrong way round", Abdul, when the flat meeting of the year is that way as is Newmarket (technically), Sandown, Kempton... I only say that because when Old Arthur (God rest his soul) had Blazing Walker, he was absolutely bloody brilliant except he lived in Northumberland and so his campaigning was essentially left-handed because of the Northern layout when he jumped right-handed. Pissed up when he went to Ascot, but effectively spent his entire career going the "wrong way round" for him.
Was a huge early morning price when he won at Aintree as well. Happy days...
