I do like Pale Ale Boat , but do find its a bit of a broad brush term for quite a few different types of beer , some awful and others really good.
The Beer I have liked the most recently was

yep know what you mean kit ....never seen that one round here but we have a good booze shop nearby so i'll keep my eyesopen for it. Lighter beers seem better out of the fridge than traditional beer too so its ideal for the summer. I like that Marsdens one drop on a warm summer evening.

Re: Old Speckled Hen
Speckled Hen is good stuff, Gold Label barley wine (or any barley wine) is the liver killer of choice for discerning and moneyed up alcos - triple the strength of normal beer and half as strong again as special brew

Re: Old Speckled Hen
that's the one, whitbread gold label, i used to drink it with guinness at lunchtimes, you'd buy a guinness and gold label and as the gold label comes in third pint bottles you drink a third of your pint of guinness and then lob the barley wine in which would make your guinness a lot stronger - proper pisshead drink and not much got done in the afternoons after a few of them
some german firm brought out eku28 or something which was supposed to be the new strongest beer after that and now spazzy firms are all trying to outdo each other selling 50, 50, 70% etc beer but technically, once you get into double figures it is barley wine and not beer and once you get near 20% it's wine or fortified wine and liquers/spirits above that
did you work in the whitbread brewery in chiswick street? - probably closed now but i had a xmas do there once, with a free bar - i ended up standing next to a postbox in moorgate thinking i was at a bus stop, i was rescued by someone who left after me and got me to the station, puddles of vomit everywhere that night

A session beer, worthy.
Still currently very much in love with Badger's Poacher's Choice. Fuller's ESB with a Sunday roast. Start from there
