He could be contrite as well as everything else as well - he was genuinely sorry for what he said about Joe Frazier at Manila, accepting that he went too far with the "gorilla" thing and mocking his diction/idiom among other things. That fight should have been the last for both, IMO. They threw everything into it (the word was of course that Frazier was already washed up - he showed that not to be the case) and IMO neither ever recovered.
