A movement is underway to ban England's flag from stores in Cornwall, where locals who see the town as a Celtic nation have labelled the St George's Cross 'foreign.'

Stores across the country have been preparing to display and sell the red and white flags as the World Cup tournament approaches, but locals who see Cornwall as a Celtic nation are pushing for a boycott.

A campaign on social networking site Facebook titled 'Get rid of English World Cup flags out of Cornish stores!!!!' has so far attracted 60 supporters.
Flag fury: England fans wave the flag at the 2006 World Cup. Some football fans in Cornwall want the flag banned as it is 'foreign' to the area, which some locals claim as a Celtic nation

The page, which is being run anonymously, features an image of the St George's Cross on fire and declares: 'Cornwall has its own flag as it is recognised by the rest of the Celtic world as a Celtic country.

Why is Englishness being forced on Cornwall by supermarkets?'

Michael Chappell, seretary of the Cornish branch of the Celtic League, told the Sun: 'We have received many coplaints about the oncoming flood of St George flags into our country.

'And as many point out, this is a foreign flag here and can be quite insulting.'

He said many locals hoped that with 'some luck', England would be knocked out of the tournament early.

Local businesses planning to screen the matches said the campaign was ridiculous.

Sonia Peters, from Shirley Cottage Gifts in Newquay, said: 'They're making a big fuss about nothing. If people want to buy and England flag for the World Cup they should be able to.

I had one in Padstow in 1998 and was attacked by a gull trying to get it from me.
Gave me quite a cut on my nose...had to have a tetanus injection.

There are hundreds here where I live....they're ok in my book.
The one that took my nose off was obviously very hungry.
