See, I don't get that. I used to have horrible spells of seconditis and decided that place money would at least soften the blow. Has worked quite well since (the EW Lucky 15, treble odds is a thieves' paradise...).

Anything over 5/2 that you're pretty certain will place at worst has to be a bet. A point e/w on a third returns 3/4 of your outlay. A two point win skints you. Can remember a horse of my mate's running on the sand and was an absolute knocker for a place, took the 6s in the morning. Thing won, biggest single I've ever had, never really worried. I don't do too bad now - I've come out winning on days where previously I'd have lost and been crying down my leg. The fatalist in me...
