Re: Kindle
I would hold back , tablets are getting very cheap, and they have kindle apps , so you will have a gadget that can watch iplayer, surf internet etc and kindle, rather than just kindle

Re: Kindle
Like the idea but prefer the whole book process start to finish - there's an investment in it that is beyond a simple read.
Like betting with cash and receiving cash by return rather than see a number increase on screen.

Re: Kindle
Hands free usage, MG, seems to be the big plus - easier to use while exercising, say, or sitting on the couch eating nachos.

Re: Kindle
As Kit says - "for now".
I can see the huge benefit of not doing the "woooooah" balancing act of trying to keep a book open without it shutting completely, it failing, falling on the floor and finding the only patch of spilt Vimto in a forty mile radius. Easy storage on a train, say, as well

Re: Kindle
You could buy a Kindle and apparently pleasure the dog as well, Chips.
Don't fancy the prospect myself (meaning the Kindle, although I won't be tugging dachshund either) but I can see the allure.

Re: Kindle
I won't be doing either. If I want to read a book I buy one. Don't want an electronic thing to be my book. Plus no one knows what you're reading on a kindle, whereas people can see the jacket of your book.

Re: Kindle
See, my reading a book is my interest and not theirs so you may ask, but other than that, fuck off, I'm reading.
Nevertheless, with you on this, there is a communion between me and book that the Kindle won't replicate. I hate throwing books out, losing books and dear God, burning books is as offensive as it gets to me.

Re: Kindle
I have around 2000 books strewn around my house, and the idea that they could all be replaced by a tablet is frankly obscene, imo. Although it would free up some space for my pornography DVD's.

lol.
but can you imagine the stress of, 'where have I put my £111 kindle ' as opposed to ive lost my book that I paid a fiver, 2 quid or 50p for (usually charity shops)
or ive spilt tea on my kindle

Re: Kindle
agree with most on here.
can't see the harm in a kindle. anything that gets people reading is a positive.
for me though, there's nothing like the experience of a book.

Re: Kindle
I can't read books any more , the internet has made my minuscule attention span non existent .
Used to read in the 90's mainly auto biographies , but there was often fuck all else to do then.
Talking books are a nono as well. I am listening then drift of into some fucking thought pattern , come around 10 mins later and have no idea what the fuck is going on.
I can't even stand listening to people on TV/radio like 'serious' actors who talk in measured tones about the importance of their latest film , if I dont get the juice in the first 2 mins , then its fuck off mongo!

Re: Kindle
I think youre right.I used to give books a chance to grow on me, but if things dont grab me within the first few pages i lose interest. I do think its beacuse of the internet, it seems to spoil you.
I used to enjoys autobiographies of Hollywood stars. ive read shelley winters, david niven, dirk bogard, eroll flynn, laurence olivier i would like to read tony curtis, who, btw ,was a good friend of shelley winters.

Re: Kindle
Twelve months on and I'm updating my view.
They're a must have if you read a lot.
Firstly, the free stuff. I picked up some odds and ends by Ambrose Bierce because I'd always liked the snippets I'd seen but in terms of hunting down his stuff, I love book shopping but I don't relish vainglorious hunting. I managed to download some easily accessed bits in literally seconds. Outstanding. Did the same with a bit of Kipling as well just for starters.
Secondly, the pay stuff. The number of books I've fancied reading and forgotten over the years would probably make me weep. Now I can get it from the comfort of my front room when I think of it and at a reasonable price. I can be reading it in literally seconds.
Thirdly, the unit itself. My sandwich is heavier than it, it fits better in the hand than a book (hard to believe though that is), you don't have to maul it to keep it open and the bookmarks don't fall out in your bag and have you taking five minutes to get back to where you were. It fits in a wide coat pocket and frankly, it's like carrying a library about on your person. It is small enough to carry everywhere and there's always something there to pick at rather than the choice you made first thing this morning (I can have four books on the go at once and might want to chop and change - Kindle lets me do that, otherwise I have to have weightlifter's shoulders)
Wouldn't be without it - incredibly user-friendly and carries more than my forgetful head would allow me to remember

Re: Kindle
Cheers, Tone, the Robin Friday book exemplifies what I was saying; one of those books I desperately want to read but has slipped my mind. In thirty seconds, I have put it on my Kindle wish list where I can't forget it. Another plus
