Isn't it strange that we are talking about these men and it's Armistice day?
Shocked

he also said a German saved his life because he was short for his age and looked a lot younger than he actually was.

A German ended my Uncle's life in France by shooting him in the stomach as he lay sleeping unarmed in a farmhouse.
His name was Ken and he was just 21....my mum's brother.
Sad

War is futile for the person who forces war on others because, what one can obtain from cooperation is much more than what is possible by force and war

If they'd taken over, at least the fucking buses and trains would run on time.

No they wouldn't, it's a fallacy but fuck me, Tone, when you think about it, can you imagine the PR department's job if that was all they could come up with.

"So, Karl, the Reich appears to be losing popular support, what with getting our nuts kicked on the various stages of Europe and Dresden taking a, how shall I put it, I'm torn between "bit of a bonfire" and "mass suffocation of civilians". What have you got?"

"Well, fuhrer, we have to avoid all social aspects, costs of war, human and civil rights and Owens has more gold than you have stored in that Montevideo vault, Louis punched fuck out of Schmeling and England football team, Nazi salute or not, fucked us royally in our own backyard, so sport is out"

"Vell?" (note the cod German V/W thing. Bit of gritty realism)

"Mass transport. It appears our trains and buses might run slightly more efficiently. Benny the Eyetie lived off this. Until the lamp post, of course. Odd thing was he didn't make them run better"

"Is that all you haff?"

"Ja!"

"Fair enough, it's marginally better than fuck all and I'm off to Brazil once I've constructed this lifelike model tableau of me, Eva and whichever of the Mitfords I'm fucking..."

The Louis/Schmeling story is a massive read for anyone who goes trawling for it. Lifelong friends after the fight, Schmeling ended up saving a pair of Jewish children on Kristallnacht and paid for Louis's funeral in 1981. He lived to 99.
