not for the young.
Don't you hark back to simpler times.
Leslie Crowther giving presents to sick children
the Babysham reindeer
2/6d classic books
opening presents that your parents had bought, that had been hidden on the top of the wardrobe, that you had peeked at daily, they never knew.
going to family parties and having a riot with your older cousins when the grown ups were at the pub.
walking through snow with your dad and the sledge he made for you with bits he got at work from the English Steel, which only he could pull.
getting satsumas in your stocking and a sixpence in your Christmas pudding
going to the WMC and watching the Christmas show with your cousins and coming back and trying to put the cardboard nativity scene together that the Father Christmas there had given you.
getting the Timex watch you always wanted
Eric and Ernie Christmas night and the Black and White Minstrels
the Carol services
I wish I was young again.

MG, they knew you'd peeked.
Bizarrely, it was something I never did - it never really interested me, I was a pragmatic little fucker and could easily wait.
I miss the coffee Quality Street. They might have been everyone's least favourite but they were the first to go in our house - I am a sucker still for coffee chocolate (but not chocolate coffee).
Roses weren't allowed to have nuts in them. You only saw bags of minis in the run up to Christmas.
Annuals that were getting on for two hundred pages long.
Picking apart the hamper when it arrived.
I read the other day that everyone should be in an environment at Christmas where there is a kid present because you clearly see the difference. I believe that entirely - there's no disappointment in a kid opening presents. I remember one of mine opening a birthday present and it being a duplicate of something he already had. "Yeeees, I've got two now" was his response. Kids. Aging you and keeping you young at the same time

Re: not for the young.
when my sons were teenagers I used to buy a christmas hamper for about 2 quid a week.when it came I used to have to hide it because my youngest son used to raid it.
he once made me a smoked oyster ( from the hamper) sandwich in August and left it at the side of my bed where I couldnt move cos I had done my back in.he came back 3 hours later seeing me being sick cos of it.

Re: not for the young.
Smoked oyster sandwich? That sounds like a round of Call My Bluff
So, "smoked oyster sandwich". Is it:
(i) a convoluted sexual practice involving two men, a woman and one huge pearl (naturally)
(ii) slang for a particularly hairy Mary
(iii) docker's patois for a particularly big gobbet of phlegm
Over to Frank Muir whose stutter makes him look like a man who's just been engaged in a bit of oral and hasn't had a chance to come the 'tache...

Only did it to take you back...
"Cheese" is too vague. A nice full cheddar would be acceptable; any Red Leicester not so much

Re: not for the young.
Priceless, MG. Who would think "Mum's back's out although there's a coat in her room with the name Bert on, what's that all about, what would make her feel better? I know - oysters. But not any oysters. Smoked oysters. From a while back..."
