He was a strange bloke, MG. He was in a similar vein as Mike Brearley but whereas Brearley was a thinker who could be unorthodox and found success with it despite his relatively limited big stage sporting capabilities (comparatively - he was 34 when he first played for England, played 39 times and never hit a test hundred but he captained in 31 tests out of 39 and only lost 4 in charge), Roebuck seemed to me even as a kid (me, not him) as something of an odd fucker who with in his side the most awkward fast bowler in the world, the most famous all rounder and the one batsman you didn't want to fuck about with, basically got them all sacked. He even made Wisden cricketer of the year 1988 despite never winning national honours. But essentially, while he was a senior voice there, Somerset were shit.

I remember reading bits about him during his county career and he came across as a strange bird, tbh.
