They don't need to restore confidence. 98% of the high street food business is in the hands of nine stores. The rest are playing for the remaining crumbs until those nine stores mop up the remaining coverage.

All the "free market" does is ultimately propel one big fucking unit into the head of a monopoly. Look at buses - for all the fucking deregulation, you've ended up with Arriva or Stagecoach running the show with the odd Happy Al or Cumfybus running three offpeak routes out of a lockup on a semi-derelict industrial estate. Your tickets are non-transferable and you can't take a suburb-to-suburb journey without getting into what is a glorified transit driven by a wannabe cabbie in a hoodie. That's not an improvement from a local council running uniform liveried services to self-fund, not for profit.
