Regarding school and so forth, my old man was a talented amateur footballer in an era of course where a career in the same was paid pennies.  He played at a tidy level, was the only private in his regiment team when he did his National Service (and played against Albert Quixall who was doing his two at the same time) and came home, got engaged and married and never really played beyond his Shipping League winners medal in 1956.

He used to play in a side with a "Squibby" Hughes.  They were a good side, he maintains the best amateur full back he ever saw was in that side, and it was neither he nor Squibby.  My old man was a right half.  I want to say Squibby was a left half but I can't be sure.  Sadly, as you know, I can't go back and confirm.

You look at an 80-year-old or 90-year-old man today and you have literally no idea what he was or could have been - I know a bloke who was there when they liberated Belsen, for example.  The opportunity to have a completely left-field career from your upbringings (I'm not talking about Belsen here, obviously, but rather the sudden finding yourself managing the All Whites and laying the groundwork for World Cup qualification in 1982) doesn't seem to be there any more.  Modern life has stifled it.
